Evander didn’t just choose a career in science; he joined a family legacy. While many are drawn to the lab by textbooks, Evander was inspired by his grandmother, a trailblazer who founded an independent laboratory at a time when female business owners were a rarity.
Now, Evander is carving his own path as a Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprentice at Analysis Scientific LTD.
Learning by Doing
For Evander, the traditional classroom wasn't the right fit. "I am a hands-on learner who struggles to stay engaged all day in a classroom," he explains. "When learning skills that I can then put into practice, I learn much better."
This "work-and-learn" approach has already paid off. Evander shared a breakthrough moment where his intuition, honed by daily lab work, aligned with raw data. He was able to predict a complex test result within 0.2 of the final calculation before even running the equations. “The prediction result was for my own development; results must always be properly worked out prior to the issue of reports,” Evander added.
"I no longer feel stressed or anxious when things don't go to plan. I feel like I have the skill set and knowledge to deal with issues when they arise."
Confidence Through Support
The journey hasn't just been about technical skills; it’s been about self-belief. Despite initial doubts about his abilities, the combined support from his employer and Skills4Science has transformed his outlook.
Beyond the technical training, the apprenticeship has been a catalyst for Evander’s personal development, helping him master essential life skills like organisation, time management, and stress management. This growth was fuelled by a powerful feedback loop with his tutor, Katie, whose constant encouragement helped Evander overcome self-doubt. "My tutor, Katie, has regularly helped to boost my self-confidence and prove that I can aim higher than I initially intended," Evander notes, proving that the right support system can transform a student's professional trajectory and their belief in what they can achieve.
Looking Ahead: From Apprentice to Director
The apprenticeship has turned uncertainty into a clear, ambitious career path. Evander no longer just sees a job; he sees a future. After completing his Level 3, he may pursue higher education with one ultimate goal in mind: climbing to a Managing Director role within the company to help it grow and expand.
