Before joining Skills4Pharmacy’s Level 3 Science Manufacturing Technician (SMT) apprenticeship programme, Tabitha had begun developing her experience and skills in pharmacy through roles in community pharmacy and GP surgeries, and even traditional medicine settings, including compounding and herbal medicine—a hands-on approach she truly enjoyed. When she came across the SMT apprenticeship advertisement on the NHS website, it immediately piqued her interest. Although initially uncertain about whether to pursue a Pharmacy Technician or Science Manufacturing Technician programme, the unique aspects of our SMT programme inspired her to apply and take a leap into an area she hadn’t considered before.
The apprenticeship programme not only offered Tabitha the opportunity to gain a Level 3 qualification (equivalent to two A-levels) but also allowed her to learn while earning – a crucial factor since returning to full-time education was financially unfeasible.
One of the aspects Tabitha values most is the ability to learn on the job without sacrificing her income. “It’s been an amazing experience. I’m gaining real-world experience while still having the guidance and mentorship I need,” she shares. Her tutor, Val, has been a constant source of support, providing timely responses to questions and fostering a sense of security throughout the programme.
Like any journey, the apprenticeship comes with challenges. For Tabitha, balancing work, study, and life has been demanding, especially with assignments, research, and the need to carve out time to absorb information. Her natural curiosity often leads her to explore topics in-depth, which, while rewarding in the long term, can be time-consuming when deadlines are tight.
Despite these challenges, Tabitha credits Skills4Pharmacy for their efficient and supportive approach. “From the start, everything has been seamless. Meetings were set up before I began, and I got to meet Val beforehand, which was reassuring. The team is incredibly responsive, and even personal well-being is prioritised with access to safeguarding support.”
Tabitha also notes the challenges of working in Yeovil Hospital – an acute hospital run by Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, where pressures on staff and resource constraints can sometimes impact the learning experience. Despite this, her resilience and passion for the programme remain strong, along with the support from her colleagues.
Looking ahead, Tabitha looks forward to continuing her studies and building on her qualifications. “This Level 3 apprenticeship opens the door for further opportunities. I’d like to expand my knowledge. I want to grow and explore new avenues,” she says.
When asked what advice she would give to others considering starting an apprenticeship, Tabitha advises, “Be open-minded. Every opportunity is a chance to learn and grow, even if it’s different from what you’ve done before.”
Tabitha’s story highlights the transformative power of apprenticeships in creating career pathways while balancing learning and earning, making a real difference in the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors.
